Barclays Capital is the investment banking division of Barclays Bank PLC, one of the largest financial services groups in the world. With a focus on financing and risk management, it is internationally active as an intermediary and adviser to corporate, financial institutions, governments and multinational organisations.
The company’s headquarters building in North Colonnade, Canary Wharf was inherited from BZW (one of the original constituent companies merged into Barcap in 1997) and was furnished in a mixture of custom-built dealer desks for trading floors and conventional office furniture for back-office areas. As part of the refurbishment of the two floors, leased by Barcap, as well as accommodating a growing work force of housing 4,500 staff, the company wanted to test whether it was possible to do away with the specialisation of office furniture and arrive at a work place solution that would perform for both traders and back offices.
The company operates from locations around the world, and also wanted to establish a partnership with a furniture manufacturer that would enable it to leverage from development work done in London when facility changes took place in other locations. Providers of custom solutions generally cannot support international supply, so the company sought to partner with one of the few globally significant office furniture suppliers.
